Studer, Jacob Henry (1840-1904)

Jacob Henry Studer was a printer, lithographer, painter, and popular ornithologist active in Columbus, Ohio in the late 1800’s. He is best known as the author of “Birds of North America”, one of the best known of the American books on birds of our continent from the second half of the 1800’s. The folio contains beautiful illustrations drawn and colored from life by Theodore Jasper, a German American illustrator and physician by profession, who pursued a life long interest in ornithology. The folio represents upwards of seven hundred different species and varieties of North American birds in their natural surroundings, and include a popular account of their habitat and characteristics. The work was originally published in 40 parts over a span of five years. It quickly achieved public acclaim, as it was one of the first books available for bird identification at a price that was more affordable than the works of such artists as Audubon & Gould.
