Staudinger, Otto (1830-1900)

Dr. Otto Staudinger was a German entomologist who specialized in world and Palearctic butterflies. He was the author of such notable works as “Katalog der Lepidopterem des europaischen Faunengebietes”, published in 1871; “Exotische Tagfalter in systematischer Reihenfolge mit Beruecksichitigung neuer Arten”, published in two volumes from 1888-1892; and “Katalog der Lepidopterem des palarktischen Faunengebietes”, published in 1901 after his death. Staudinger was considered one of the largest natural history dealers in the world specializing in the collection and sale of insects to museums, scientific institutions, and individuals. Today, part of his collection is in the possession of his heirs and private collectors, but the majority is housed in the Humboldt Museum in Berlin.
Prints from this publication are rare, and feature very nice original hand coloring.
