In 1819, Dr. Theodor Nees von Esenbeck was Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Bonn. He was responsible for publishing works in various disciplines, although his primary interest was in medicinal plants and their products. “Plantae Officinales, oder Sammlung Offizineller Pflanzen…” was published in four volumes, starting in 1821. It contained a total of 552 plates, lithographed by Arnz & Co., after illustrations by Aime Henry. These plates depict fruits, nuts, spices, vegetables, garden flowers and trees.

Prints from this publication are rare and feature excellent original hand coloring
