L'Admiral, Jacob (1700-1770)
Jacob L’Admiral specialized in the metamorphosis of various species of butterflies. He produced a total of 33 copper etchings, that after his death in 1770, Dr. M. Houttuyn acquired. Dr. Houttuyn edited the text and ultimately published the plates in 1774. Only plate I and plate VII bear the engravers signature, making this plate even more desirable. This work is considered as being of very high entomological and botanical quality.
This print is only one of two in the publication that is signed by L’Admiral in the plate. It is extremely rare and features original hand coloring
