Jonston, Johannes (1603-1675)

Johannes Jonston, a physician, published the work “Dendrographias” in 1662. It is regarded as one of the earliest general works on trees and shrubs. The work is divided into 10 books, each dealing with a different class of tree; fruit bearing, nut bearing, aromatic, acorn bearing, resinous, pod bearing, roses, other flowering trees, and 2 other miscellaneous categories. It is regarded as a learned compilation by the author, rather than an original work based on new insights and scientific observation.
Prints from this publication are extremely rare and feature expert later hand coloring.
