Hamilton, Sir William (1730-1803)

Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803) was a distinguished antiquary and archaeologist who dedicated much time and energy to the preservation of antiquities. His personal collection of Greek and Roman vases was perhaps the finest ever assembled, and was eventually purchased for, and still resides in, the British Museum. Concerned that many people would not be able to appreciate the aesthetic splendors of his collection, Hamilton commissioned the author dHancarville to produce a series of books with hand colored illustrations by some of the most accomplished engravers of the day. These plates are from Antiquities Etrusques Grecques et Romaines, Quarto edition, published in 1787
