Dietterlin, Wendel (1550-1599)

Wendel Dietterlin, a German painter, draughtsman and engraver, was the son of a Protestant pastor and spent his childhood in Lissenheim before moving to Strasbourg with his widowed mother. From 1575 to 1589, he worked on painting frescoes on the facades of important buildings in Bruderhof and Strasbourg, combining mythological and biblical scenes in an iconographical relationship and emphasized the architectural structure of the facade. Dietterlin’s famous work, the “Architectura von Austheilung”, published in Nuremberg in 1598, contained magnificent depictions of windows, chimneypieces, doors, fountains and monuments designed in Dietterlin’s strapwork style and was an immediate success, gaining Europe-wide popularity.
