De Rossi, Domenico (1657-1737)

Domenico De Rossi was sent to Venice at an early age to study architecture with his uncle, Giuseppe Sardi, however when he was found to be an unwilling pupil, an apprenticeship as a stonemason was arranged for him. De Rossi’s early stonemason training may explain his careful attention to architectural detail. He supervised the rebuilding of the Church of S. Girolama after it burned in 1705, and his design was selected in a competition for the facade of the Church of S. Stae in 1709. In 1714, he was designing the restructuring of the Church of the Holy Virgin in Ljubljana (Slovenia). This engraving is from a collection of prints after important statues in Rome, engraved by various artists.
