Pierre-Joseph Buchoz was a lawyer, physician and botanist who was very interested in the medicinal virtues of plants. His plates are remarkable for their great attention to detail, and are marked with both Latin nomenclature as well as the common name in French. Buchoz is notorious for his method of reusing plates, making subtle differences, and using in many books. This particular work featured for the first time drawings of flora from both China and Europe, and had a distinctly Asian style. This was the first European work to do so and was ahead of his time in introducing Oriental influences to the Parisian art world.

Prints from this publication are Extremely Rare and feature original hand coloring.
