Charles Robert Bree spent five years researching and documenting the birds of Europe, as he felt that the birds of Britain and the tropics had already been well illustrated by the likes of Gould and Meyer. He employed the well known draughtsman and painter Benjamin Fawcett, who was one of the finest of the 19th century woodblock color printers. Together they produced Brees famous work A History of the Birds of Europe, not observed in the British Isles published in London in 1875-1876.
