Regnier, Claude after Junius Brutus (1810-1885) Life of George Washington
Life of George Washington, “The Citizen” (George Washington’s Wedding). This beautifully colored lithograph was printed in Paris by Rose-Joseph Lemercier (1803-1887), and sold in New York through M. Knoedler. The prints produced in New York in the 1850’s were never as well drawn or as refined as this, and Lemercier was rather successful at garnering an upscale lithography market. Throughout the 19th century, many American dwellings had portraits of Washington over the fireplace or family table, and even in Europe portraits could be found representing both an individual and societal ideal.
This print is very rare and features original hand coloring
