Baird, Spencer Fullerton
Spencer Fullerton Baird was born in 1823 in Reading, Pennsylvania. In 1845 he was appointed Professor of Natural History at Dickenson College, and in 1848 received a grant from the Smithsonian Institution to explore the caves of Pennsylvania, which was the first grant made by the Institution for scientific exploration and field research. In 1850 he was appointed assistant secretary of the Smithsonian, and in 1878 became the secretary. Starting with his own personal collection he developed the United States National Museum and was in charge of explorations and the collections made by the government in the expanding West. Baird’s publications exceed 1000, covering subjects such as mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, geology and travel, with “The Birds of North America” being one of his most important.
